Don’t Fight Fire, Embrace it
January 27, 2009 by Joe Lawrence

In every dispute there are at least two sides. Neither side is completely without fault. There is some, even if very little, validity to the other’s points. Even if I am the best debater in the world, I never could change your every belief. What I can do is allow you to agree with me on my major points. Then the rest will follow when you are ready.
God instilled in each of us free will, and we believe whatever we choose. All of us have certain things that are fundamental to our existence. Core beliefs and values that shape who we are and what we will become. No other person will change you or those beliefs. The only person that can change you is you.
Why, then, try to change what another believes to be his soul’s foundation? It is aimless. You can get them, at most, to see your point and maybe even a degree of empathy. However, you never will change someone by bringing up some good information to counter what they feel. The answer is to give them what they need to change their own beliefs.
How can you get someone to change? Play to her ego, and give her the power to make the decision. We all want everyone to believe what we do. We want the world to rotate around us. Everyone has the inner desire to leave a legacy. Industries make billions over athletes who strive to get into the record books. Stars want the number one movie or song. To be honest, I want to be on a best-seller’s list!
Humans know there is more out there, and they want it. I could buy a brand new car today and love it. That is until my neighbor whizzes by in a nicer model. Suddenly, I lose that feeling of material dominance. Why not cater to this sensation? Remember when backed into a corner even a docile animal will attack, give them the center stage!
Show respect, and they will open their minds to your core beliefs and then there can be change.
