I’m a Real Expert!
October 13, 2009 by Joe Lawrence
I am the leading expert on thermo-nuclear physics for North America. Not many of you knew that, did you? Mainly, because it is not true at all. For starters, I am not a physicist. Also, I had to use the spell check on ‘nuclear.’ Do you really know who the people are that you are trusting for daily information?
Many readers automatically assume because someone has a website or blog she is an expert. Lots of writers have Twitter followings and are leaders in the social media realm, so we think they must surely be pros. Don’t get me wrong, some are true experts in their field while others are just looking for an audience.
Recently, I have been very busy with the daily life and not had the time to dig for news about current events. I must rely on certain people to cover important areas of my life. For example for my Christian growth, I follow my pastor’s blog, another interesting pastor and one very interesting Christian author. These are all men who I respect as Christian leaders and trust they are teaching their interpretation of God’s word.
I do a lot of research on people before I accept their teaching. This is why I am very skeptical of Wikipedia because anyone can add to the information. Even though they may be writing from a reliable source, people are likely to put their spin on information. An example would be me trying to talk about religion from a neutral ground after just telling you I follow Christian writers daily. Obviously, my teaching would be slanted in that direction no matter how hard I tried.
So, if you wanted an unbiased opinion, you would need to read my writing and then that of a stout non-believer. Then you can weigh out your own beliefs. From there you can seek a source that feeds your interests.
In this fast-paced, information age, there are many people trying to steal your thoughts with false claims of being an expert. Look into their true motives before you blindly follow. Not every author is an expert.
